Ingredients

  • margarita rim* optional
  • 2 oz tequila silver or gold
  • 1 oz Cointreau triple sec or Grand Marnier can be substituted
  • 1 oz lime juice
  • 1 oz watermelon syrup**

Instructions

  • Fill the bottom of a shallow plate with water. Sprinkle the margarita rim into a separate shallow plate and disperse it evenly. Dip the edge of your glass into the water, let the excess drip for a few seconds, then dip the glass into the margarita rim to coat completely.
  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add the tequila, Cointreau, lime juice, and watermelon syrup to the shaker. Secure the lid and shake for 10-15 seconds. Place a few ice cubes into your prepared glass, and strain the margarita into the glass.

Notes

*Margarita rim is typically made of pure kosher salt. I made my own version with 1 tbsp salt, 1 tbsp granulated sugar, and fresh lime zest.
**How to make your own fresh watermelon syrup:
  1. Blend 4-5 cups of ripe watermelon into a puree.
  2. Pour the mixture through a mesh sieve into a saucepan.
  3. Bring the mixture to a rapid simmer and whisk in 3/4 cup brown sugar.
  4. Let the mixture reduce by about half, stirring occasionally. Let the syrup cool in the pot until it's safe to handle, then transfer to a heat-safe container. Let it cool completely in the refrigerator before using it.
